The main attraction of this area is the Temple Street Night Market. Starting in the late afternoon/early evening, the streets are closed off to traffic and dozens of flea market-style stalls open for business. It could be my imagination, but this market seems much more crowded than the other markets, as it's especially popular with tourists.
Merchandise of all kinds are for sale here, all neatly displayed up and down the walls. Lots of souvenirs are available for the folks back home, such as these t-shirts:

Watches are also very popular, though the "copy watch" is sometimes offered more discreetly out of a catalog.

Surrounding the market are many outdoor food stands and restaurants. Most of them feature seafood. We've heard that the food in these places is not so good, especially for the price, as the owners know they can charge tourists a premium for the privilege of sitting outside.
Another popular destination in this area is the Australia Dairy Co.
It's basically a diner that is famous for its steamed egg-and-milk custards, among other things. The custards are displayed in the outside window for your admiration:
They come in your choice of yellow or white (with egg yolks, or not), served hot or cold. They're not too sweet, with a lovely creamy texture that make it an ideal comfort food.
This place is also famous for its brusque, efficient waiters, who work at lightning speed to ensure the highest possible rate of table turnover. They have to keep things moving in order to accommodate the crowds constantly queueing up outside. So if you try to linger over your coffee, the waiters will loudly let you know that you're just getting in their way.
