I decided to hit the summer sales today, so I went over to the Kowloon side and tackled the biggest mall in Hong Kong, Harbour City. It has two million square feet of shopping, plus a hotel, a cinema, serviced apartments, an art gallery, office towers.... Conveniently, it's the first thing that greets the many cruise ships that dock at the pier there.
To navigate its 750 or so shops and restaurants, it helps to pick up a guide and map:
Just like the mall, however, the map is rather large and unwieldy. Look how huge it is compared to the guide!
Having the map is not enough to locate any particular shop. Each shop is numbered and coded according to its floor level and "zone" -- the five different colored areas on the map. The guide is a list of all the shops and their codes; just match them to the map. By the way, the guide itself is 27 pages long!
At the mall, I saw many people walking around while holding up the unfolded map in front of them. It looked like they were all reading newspapers.
