Hong Kong's Beale Street

Had a night out with our friends M. and H. on Sunday.  We went to the Central district, an area that is quite unlike the other areas I've seen so far in that it's very hilly, like San Francisco.  The terrain made me grateful for this most unusual form of public transport:

This is just part of one of the longest escalator systems in the world, about 800 metres long, with a vertical climb of 135 metres!  It runs downhill in the mornings, then reverses course at night.  There are plenty of places to jump on and off, and lots of restaurants and shops cleverly placed at eye level as you're traveling on it.  Best of all, it's free!

Within Central is Lan Kwai Fong, a cramped street where expats like to go bar-hopping and clubbing.  It's like Beale Street in Memphis, in that the streets become closed to cars and most of the venues are open-air.

Of course, Beale Street is not complete without Elvis impersonators, like this one:

He sang "Blue Suede Shoes" for us and posed for photos.  It's like we never left Memphis!
