It's hard to see, but there are no 4, 13, 14, 24, 34, or 44th floors. The Cantonese word for "4" is a homonym for the word "death," so traditionally one goes to great lengths to avoid it as much as possible. The number 14 is even worse, as it sounds like "certain death."
Not sure why the building owner decided to eliminate the 13th floor. Perhaps he is expecting a lot of Westerners to live there. Our hotel, which very definitely caters to Westerners, does not have a 13th floor:
The number 8, however, is considered very lucky, as it means "fortune." The number of the building where we hope to live is 880, and our estate agent told us that the owner bought the property in part because of its number. Naturally, we now expect a double dose of fortune to come our way.
